1999 XJ Blower Motor Resistor replacement
 

Changed my blower motor resistor today after I only had either 1 or full blast on the aircon and heater.

Took a few pics which someone might find useful.

The resistor is located under the glovebox in the passenger side footwell. There is a curved plastic cowl which sits under the box to stop your passengers feet kicking the plethora of connectors and cables under there.

Tools:
1/4 drive socket set with 7 or 8mm socket, 6" extension useful here.
# Phillips head screwdriver or socket.

1) Take off glovebox door with screwdriver - 3 screws underneath that attach the hinge to the glovebox casing.

2) Locate the 4 bolts holding on the curved plastic cowling. I've taken pics of these as I had a little bother finding them.

2 are visible inside the glovebox now that the door is removed. Also accessable from footwell but have to look in through glovebox to get to.

2 are underneath the cowling accesable from the footwell - u gotta reach up to get em. Only one pictured here, just feel for the other one it's to the rear in the middle.

3) Blower motor resistor is in a module with a plug coming out the back of it. Attached with 2 bolts. Pull off the connector (yet another different type of locking mechanism to hold this one in. How many different types are there?!).

4) Checkout rusted old unit. Swap in new unit, plug back in.

5) Test the blower before putting back together!

6) Stick back together and enjoy variable speed aircon/ heating.

Awesome write up Dude, i did most of this on the weekend, hoping to solve some of my heater dilema's...

Question, where did you pick up your resistor and how much did it set you back? and part No?

Also, did you have to chase up any other fuses? i have been a bit confused with getting my heater blower actually working, the blower motor is fine, but im not getting power at the plug for the motor itself...

in searching for this i was supposed to find a fuse panel in my kick panels, but no dice there either...

sigh, maybe the resistor will fix everything...

I find their catalogue really useful for finding parts as they have it by model year and have good pics too.

By fuses in kickpanel have you checked driver side under the dash on the right hand side? There is about 30+ fuses in there usually for the accessory type stuff like radio/ heater/ interior bulbs etc.

I didnt' see any more fuse locations in the passenger side when I had this off and the other panel on the left hand side either. (Was checking speaker wiring).

Is a 2000 the same?

they will fit XJ and TJ 97-01
