KK roof Racks

Hi Folks,
We've recently bought a used 08 Cherokee Sport. It was not optioned with the Jeep roof rails - it just has those standard rubber ridges.

Does anyone make aftermarket roof rails for the KKs? I asked the local dealer here in Toowoomba, and he wasn't sure the genuine Jeep rails could be retro fitted. I know I can buy Jeep and aftermarket rails on US eBay to fit where the rubber ridge presently sits. But, I can't see how the rubber ridges come off in order to fit them.

I want to carry a couple of kayaks on the cherokee, rather than drag my camper trailer around all the time.
I would appreciate any help / advice on this problem.

thanks!

G'Day blackness,

I had the same problem when I got my 09 Sport - I wanted roof racks for a roof capsule, and eventually surf boards.

After some investigation, I discovered that there were no racks to suit the black rubber moulds on a KK Sport :wall:. Even the OEM Jeep roof racks suit the Limited models only. I ended up removing the black rubber moulds and replacing them with OEM production rails, so I could get racks to suit.

The Jeep production rails were about $290 from the dealer, and I got some Thule Aero bars for about $310.

Underneath the black moulds are factory bolts that the production rails bolt to - very easy to install.

The black rubber moulds were very easy to remove, but the 3M double sided tape that was left behing was a :0= to remove - a plastic scraper, goo remover and about 3 beers to remove it.....

If you'd like me to upload some photos, just let me know.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Ben,
If you have photos of this process, that'd be great.

Before I start tearing into things - I need to see how it's done.
I'm not great on instructions!

regards.

Blackness, sorry for keeping you waiting....

I couldn't find the photos I took of the process, so I just quickly ran out, took my rails off, and snapped a few pics so you could see what your dealing with.

The removal of the Black Rubber Moulds;
The Black rubber moulds came off easy enough - I didn't care if they broke during removal. There were 2 parts to the black moulds - the top part broke away first, and then the bottom peeled away from the roof. Do this however you can, just take care not to damage the paintwork on your roof, or the bolts.

This left the remnants of the 3M double sided tape I mentioned before. To remove this, I used a plastic scraper (to not damage the paintwork), a product called 'De-Solve-it' (from bunnings) and a cloth. This part took the longest, cause I wanted it to look good & clean. You can see parts of the 3M tape I left in this pic between the bolts, because it would have been 'out of sight'.

Installation of the OEM Production Rails;
This was VERY easy. The rails came assembled, with nuts to fit on the bolts already located in the roof of the car. Just make sure you sort out which rail goes on which side, then place them over the bolts, and tighten. Finish by placing the covers over them and VIOLA! The car now has roof rails!

Again, I hoped this helps.
