Clutch replacement, greasing things 4.0 TJ
 

Hi All,

A bit slack of me, but looking for a quick answer as I'm elbow deep in grease replacing the clutch on my 4.0 Wrangler TJ at 175K.

I've greased the splines of the input shift with graphite lube that came with the LUK clutch I imported. I have cleaned the tube that the throw out bearing rides on, and the bearing itself is pre greased, so I'm adding nothing there.

I'm wrestling with whether to leave the tube completely clean as the throw out bearing is plastic in that area - comments or experience welcomed here please?

Also, where the back of the throw out bearing rides on the clutch fork, I'm tempted to put a tiny bit of copperslip as its metal to metal, but again, not sure, please help?

I have lithium greased the ball on the fixed end of the fork and the other end for the clutch slave cylinder, so think that's OK

Appreciate your experience if you've done this job in the past.

I haven’t done a TJ clutch job but I have done a lot of clutch jobs on various makes over the years and light smear of grease on all wear surfaces is a good idea. But it is not really necessary between the throw out bearing face and the clutch fingers.

The clutch that came out was a SACHS part, do you happen to know if that would have been original equipment?

Didn't look like anyone had been in there before, but 175K old...

Both LUK and Sachs have been used as OEM clutches on TJs from what I've seen over the years on jeepforum.com
