Which Optima Battery for HEMI?

Hey there, I'm looking at 2 replacement batteries; the D27F and the D34 (and D34M). The D34 is smaller and looks like it can fit under the hood of the HEMI, but not sure on the D27F. The battery I got in there already is 190mm tall, the D34 is just below 200mm and the D27F is just under 220mm. So my question is, did any of the HEMI blokes fit a D27F easy in there, as I'd rather the stronger battery?

Otherwise, is the D34M blue top better to run than the yellow top?

Whatever you do, dont go to that Battery World in Blacktown. They screwed me over.

You are better off with batteriesdirect.com.au or your own supplier.

The D27F fits the CRD, the battery tray is the same isn't it?

I use a D34M, the threaded posts are handy. But otherwise they're the same battery as far as I can tell (previously had a yellow top for cranking with the bluetop in the boot.).

The D34 leaves a fair-bit of space on the battery tray, which I use for a circuit breaker and bits-and-pieces. Looks like a D27F would fit.

Thanks guys...

Clarky, do you have a close-up pic of your battery? I wanna see how high the negative terminal sits compared to the inner guard lip where the bonnet sits on top.

Also, could you please take a measurement from the inner guard lip to the bottom of the tray (on the side of the battery) to see if they're mounted the same as HEMI's? Whichever way I measure, 220mm to the top of the terminals seems a bit high, so just wanted to check/compare with yours.

I bit the bullet and went Optima D27F yellow top [830CCA, 66Ah, 140min reserve, 24.1kg, 309mm(L)x172mm(W)x219mm(H)]

As opposed to the D34 [750CCA, 55Ah, 120min reserve, 19.5kg, 254mm(L)x175mm(W)x199mm(H)]

Sorry mate, I missed your post :hammer: suppose I don't need to measure now

I believe you are measuring from the lip of the battery tray? It sits 20mm higher then where the battery sits.

From the top of the lip

From the base of the battery tray to the top of the metal lip of the inner guard (where the terminal is) measures 220mm

Battery height is 225mm

Plenty of room to position battery

Thanks Clarky. That helps heaps. Yes, I measured from the top of the lip on the battery tray. Looks like our tray depths are identical. So glad. Was worried if the bonnet would close without the terminals touching it.

Just to post an update that I've fitted the D27F like Dave's. So far so good.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...7227f08708.jpg

Not enough dirt in that engine bay!

Mr_TT-89 12-03-2018 01:43 PM

Sorry to bring up an old post, but was there any modifications needed or tweaking with the terminals or tray to make the D27 fit Clarky, was it a simple mount up like other batteries as im looking at getting one today, turns out my 820cca battery is putting out 600atm. was wondering about the D31 900CCA bat would that be overkill?

Clarky 12-03-2018 02:30 PM

no mod's needed. Fits like the factory one. The D31 may be a bit tall and the terminal position may require the use of aftermarket terminal clamps to reach the posts.

Mr_TT-89 12-03-2018 02:57 PM

So the D27F should be fine for all the requirements of the CRD GC?

Clarky 12-03-2018 08:55 PM

Has been for mine. Not 1 electrical gremlin in the last 18 months since installed (touch wood)
