Batteries - do they make them like they used to?

My XJ95 factory battery lasted about 8 years. Every year thereafter they seemed to last 3 years. I used to buy branded batteries and then took whatever NRMA batteries could supply.

The batteries on average lasted 3 years and then their life expectancy began to shrink. In the last 10 years they only lasted 2 years (reflecting a similar warranty). I am now on a battery that is approaching a full 3 years. WOW!

Time to think about a new battery as I have been rather lucky with an unbranded blue battery.

What has been your experience? [FWIW My JKU still has its factory battery 6 years later].

Could be the battery technology. I've seen over here (in the UK) that there are lead acid batteries with calcium and other tech now, but many of these batteries require a charging voltage of 14.3V rather than the 13.6-13.8 that many older vehicles charge at. Using these newer batteries in a vehicle designed for bog standard lead acid batteries can apparently result in shorter battery life.

My 2010 JKU is still on its original Optima D31A battery. Eleven and a half years and still going strong.
