MJOC driver training. Very muddy, a great day to test that traction control. Didn't get time to play on the ramps or the sluice box but the wombat holes and dam provided plenty of challenge which the car handled beautifully.

Bomber 02-09-2007 09:51 PM

Driver training with MJOC today - a good chance to see what the Commander will do after having a WG for 3 years. Very impressed with it, that QDII is very effective. Needs another 40-50mm clearance bu that should be solved within the fortnight.

Enjoy.

Now that I've worked out how to put pictures in, here are some of my Commander. The 1st one is it straight from the dealer (the side steps are required due to short wife), the 2nd is with bullbar and Mickey T ATZs (side steps broken off after many knocks on tracks), the last one with 2" lift (dobinsons & bilstiens) and Roo Lites. Am currenlty working on modifying JKS Super Nerfs to provide sliders and a sort of sidestep for the wife.

2 inch lift and custom side rails/steps

hi all , here are some recent pics of my (dads) commander after i fitted a 2 inch terraflex lift kit. i also built and fitted custom side/rock rails and colour coded them to suit the grey plastic trim.
i mentioned on another thread somewhere that i would post some pics of the actual lift kit install in progress. however , i did the install by myself in the carport out front and it was such a pain in the arse job that i forgot to take pics as i went along. sorry.
the side/rock rails were a far more pleasant job as i built them in the comfort of my shed with the radio to keep me company.
cheers .

G'day fellas!

I'm keen as mustard to find some more Commanders to put through Australian 4WD Action magazine, do you have any more photos or know where some customised Commanders are? Anything with some modified bits and custom barwork etc we'd like to take a look at..

jammy jeep 15-10-2008 10:44 AM

Well, we've got 2 nice ones in the ACT Jeep Club. Ours has got 2" lift (Dobinsons springs/Rancho shocks), MT ATZs, Long range tank, roof rack with tyre carrier, Nudge Bar with Light force 240's and won best presented commander at 2006 jambo - and we pull a t-van with it.
Keith has got a new one with a custom bullbar and roolites - 2" lift (Dobinsons springs/Bilstein shocks), MT ATZs and won this years best presented commander at Jambo.

There's also a couple of nice ones in the Adelaide Jeep Club. One of which has done the simpson desert.

today i added the finishing touches to the new side rails/steps . 2.5 mm alloy checkerplate folded 90 degrees and shaped to fit . the round tube was difficult to use as a step, square edge of the folded alloy works much better.

Hello keef.

Best Off Road 4x4 storage drawers. Jim has a Commander template and will customise to order...Will fit either way but third row should be removed for easy access to a fridge on a slider. When photographed I hadn't got around to removing the seats and floor mounting. I had to make my own brackets for that. He probably supplies them now

keef_7 11-12-2008 07:49 PM

Thanks Wanderer,
We use our third row when family visit, so I was thinking of getting a fridge slide on one side instead of a draw and then maybe 2 narrower draws. I'll give them a call and see what they can do.

Is that the Getlost4x4 front bar? Starting to think I'll have to get one, even with the crappy aussie dollar.

KJ_andy 21-02-2009 09:02 AM

Sweet lookin' Commander. Just shows what can be done with a bit of imagination

Phunkeydude 12-03-2009 12:20 PM

Yes, that is the GetLost4x4 bumper and skid plate on my XK along with a Warn PowerPlant winch.

Hi Guys

Due to unfortunate event my blue Xj was written off (not by me never loan jeeps to siblings!!!) but had the opportunity to pick a a Commander at a very good price.

Its an 07 base model , only mods are airbags in the rear rhino roof box and rock tamers to protect the Crossover when towing. And signage for our business.

V6 turbo diesel averages 14/100 towing 1400kg.

Checkout www.dreamtimecampers.com.au for the Crossover from Vistarv
100% Australian design and manufactured.
cheers

jammy jeep 10-06-2009 02:17 PM

Ian - much congratulations on the new purchase.
Gee, I almost thought that was me towing our t-van. The crossover van is very similar at the front end.

Here's a few shots of my Brisbane Commander, she loves the BIG hill climbs and doesn't mind running on two wheels in big washouts etc. I never get a chance to take the really good shots as i'm to busy driving and shitting my self.
It's had a 2" lift at the front and 2 1/2" at the rear (OME springs & Bilstien shocks) but needs more as i've already given the muffler and petrol tank a good thumping. One day i'll go for a 4" Super Lift kit and 32" tyres.

WAWrangler 12-08-2009 03:00 PM

This one never goes off road, but its definatley worth a look.....

For all those in the east, sorry, its in Perth!!

eksjay 14-08-2009 07:53 AM

Is that one Rubicon trail rated? I don't see any stadium style seating in the interior.... looks perfect for a Simpson desert crossing... or a FNQ trip.

Not for at least a year as the 2010MY is already in production in the US.

08crd 14-08-2009 09:44 PM

If they are going to bring out a 2010 Commander maybe somebody at Chrysler will get their S#!T together and make some minor changes to the front end to make it easier to fit sensible tyres. It is bloody stupid to make a 2.3 ton 4x4 that can't take a normal size tyre that is suitable for off road e.g 265 x 65 minimum upto 265 x 75. All it shows is the people who design the car have no idea about off road requirements. No wonder Toyota,Mitsubishi and just about anybody else laughs at them. Even the baby Prado and Pajero come standard with 265 x 65, let alone the Landcruiser or Patrol (285 X 75). Jeep need to sort it out or get out of the 4X4 business. There is no point in having 160Kw/500Nm when all it does is dig holes and buries itself in it's own hole because of small tyres.
Maybe someone on the forum knows a web address to send a suggestion to, also if they can change the front slightly make it a retro-fit so we can fix ours without having to buy new rims. Also if they do it the retro fit it will be legal and comply with Aust standards. If ever there was an oppurtunity to fix a stuff up this is it lets get onto it.
Anyway I think everyone knows my thoughts now.:wall:

I've run Cooper ATs for the last 11 years over same and similar roads just as bad until the ATs were replaced by ATRs..I can categorically say they are not up to it regardless of the ads...I was the one with tyre troubles and the others with Kumos and Pirellis didn't...Comes back to the Commander tyre sizes you can fit...Cooper ATR 265/65s are only P rated and you need to fit at least 265/70s to get into LT rating..

That's why I'm running the MT ATZs and not the ATRs.....

08crd 23-08-2009 05:37 PM

Hi Wanderer. Great to hear the trip went well (apart from the tyres). I was talking to Henry at Procomp and he can get me the replacement rims. But I am thinking of just trying to fit the 265 X 65 to the standard rim, then check the clearance, maybe cut off the bolt end and cut a slot. It is just so frustrating having the basics for a great all round 4 x 4 and the manufacturer stuffing it up because of not listening to the customer. When I bought the Discovery in 1994, I recieved a questionaire 12 months later asking if I had any sugestions for improvements, funnily enough I sent a couple and it was incorperated in the nexr model.
Anyway I will probably be changing back to Land Rover, I don't see the point in spending thousands of dollars to fix up manufacturers stuff ups, which is a shame because that Merc engine is a jem its a unfortunate the suspension/tyre combination is set up for 90% on road. For a tow vehicle people will probably look at the new Ford Territory with the Land Rover 2.7 diesel in front of the Commander.:(

Greg palmer 24-08-2009 06:01 PM

Well , Love my Commander as a family 4x4. And for towing with a 2.2 ton van. I Think you need a JK or TJ jeep for real 4 wheeling. But the Commander will cover most 4x4 Tracks. I will be geting Cooper ST 245/70/17 next time. Yes Iv'e had them befor and they were good for all Driving

Greg palmer 24-08-2009 09:12 PM

The new 2010 Grand will have 245/70 R17 and 265/60 R18 and 265/50 R20 This will help you Wanderer.
