Patriot CRD engine destroyed.

Hey folks.

My gf has a patriot. It's a 2007 build, with the VW 4cyl Diesel motor.

It's always been a bit of a pain. In some ways, it's a great car, it really has potential, but seems to have been let down on the assembly and some design areas.

Anyway - just out of warranty, 70,000 odd kms, the turbo has blown itself to bits.

I suspect the seals went, with the bearings and pulled oil and debris straight through the motor.

>It still runs but blows light smoke in clouds when cold/under load, without the turbo going. (i suspect valve damage)

>The turbo whines awfully and there is a major lack of power,

>Also, the is a lot of oil leaking out of the exhaust back box.

I know when Jeep did some warranty work, they left the intercooler hose off, so the turbo was just sucking air straight in and the earth strap to the block wasn't attached - would this cause the turbo to die?

Other than that, the car is still worth around $15k AUD, the cost for a new turbo alone is $9-12k AUD, with a new head, or valves, or exhaust if thats gone too, basically looking at more than the car's worth to repair it.

Is there any other car that used the same engine/mounts/ transmission, basically, so it would drop straight in. I know the compass, some skodas, audis and vws used it, but I suspect there would be great differences?

I've got a 4/5 years old car on the drive, worth $15k which cant be driven and no idea what im going to do with it.

Ideas on a postcard....

Turbos don't cost that much, you could probably find a new one for less than $2000. Don't run the engine you coukd do more damage because the turbo oil line will lose oil to the engine. Get a vw diesel mechanic to look at it.

Did you get all you servicing done at a dealer? if so you could possibly talk to the service manager and ask if he could approach Chrysler for goodwill with regards to helping out with the repairs.

Dont run it it could self sustain off the engine oil and rev to destruction, get a second hand turbo and replace it for about $600 all in and a days work.

you probably dont need an engine replacement, but you will if you continue to run it.

Thanks guys. I've not been running it. My girlfriend limped home in it (about 30kms). All servicing done at Jeep. They did have a run in it, when it came back on the tow truck, there was oil coming out of the exhaust. She is going through the process of putting a claim in etc.

Every VW dealer I've spoken to has said take it to jeep, we wont have the diagnostics software etc etc. They dont want to touch it, I cant blame them.

Any ideas on where to grab another turbo?

I don't know about fitting it, I have all the tools and regularly take my pug to pieces, but thats little, french and fast, not like a German diesel in an American car....

The damage may not be as bad as you think, I would try to get to the turbo to see if the exhaust side is broken of if its the compressor side. If its just the exhaust side the engine may only be smoking because the oil seals may be allowing oil into the engine hence the smoke. There most likely wont be a filter between the turbo and the engine but there I think there will be an inter cooler which will act a little like a filter, not allowing anything too big to get into the engine. I would try to grab a vw workshop manual/jeep one and look at the layout of the engine/turbo. try not to stress too much.

Found a turbo

Thanks for all the responses.

It seems Im not the only one thats had this issue with this engine:evil:

Ive talked to Jeep, but they've been quite slow and rather useless, so looked around to get it fixed.

Here's the details for anyone else looking for this turbo:

Karl Venning at MTQES.com.au. Supplied the VIN number, he came back with the right turbo @ $1540 inc GST + delivery. Not bad considering others wanted $2 - 3K.

Very helpful, would recommend them :)

Quoted $600 inc GST + gaskets etc to fit it, so all in all, looking at $2440inc GST + gaskets to fit. Quite happy with that.

Jeep wanted $9K+.

How are they still in business? Last Jeep I buy (though might be getting a used TJ wrangler on the cheap).

All the best,

Joe
