WH rear wheel carrier

Has anyone used the formula off-road rear wheel carrier. Are they any good? I need a long range tank so need to move the spare from underneath.

Check out Wanderer's home page, he made a tyre carrier for his Commander, same thing should fit the Grand.

Mate has one (Formula off-road) on his WH Overland and I've been along the Balfour Track Tassie & The Gibb River Road with him and it's worked flawlessly except you may need to brace the brackets..The originals have tendency to crack on severe corrugations (he did have his Maxtrax mounted on his spare so may have caused that) but a no big deal fix...I'll see if I can get a pix of his and the bracket mod.

I need it for a trip to cape York next year so it will cop some corrugations. I may beef it up before it fatigues

Good idea..Couple of simple gussets does it..I made my carrier (with the help of a friend) for the Commander before you could get one but if the Formula Offroad was available I'd have one rather than the effort of fabricating one from scratch..Angles and removing the rear bar and aligning holes etc..real pain but then I needed a long range tank and all the cargo space I could get and no one was making a carrier..Tried on the roof but forgot going into an undergraound carpark..Didn't that cause some dramas..Notice how they have a height bar that really clangs but there is no way to back out or turn around..,,Chaos when there is a dozen cars behind you and you can't go forward..Get a carrier I say.

I had a similar issue with an underground car park at a resort that said 2.3m which I got under then as I was looking for a park I got caught on a water pipe about 2.1. Almost ripped it off.

I had the Formula Off road carrier and used it for a couple of long trips. Was well belt, easy to fit and didn't have any issues other than needing some extra padding between the arm and the locking plate to stop it rattling over corrugations.

Other observations.

On gravel roads the dirt bounces off the carrier back in to the bumper so if you take it off again your bumper looks like it's been sand blasted.

Having the weight of the carrier and wheel off the back is definitely noticeable. If your going to add a long range tank you'll definitely need uprated rear suspension if you haven't got it already.

With carrier, tank and 2 people on board it won't take much luggage to take you over GVM if you worry about that sort of thing.
