Common problems
 

Hello All,

I'm an ex WJ 2.7 diesel owner considering a diesel WK2. The Grand Cherokee is still the best looking 4x4 on the road and one of the best off road in standard form, plus the price is good. I have to say though, I'm put off by all the Jeep horror stories. As I said, I'm an ex Grand owner and my son has had a 2006 diesel Cherokee for the past 6 years for a few relatively minor annoying issues, so we are use to Jeeps. My Grand had a front ARB air locker and a rear Track Lok lsd so saw plenty of off road action. I got rid of it because it got black death twice on the same cylinder way up under the firewall. They stripped the thread removing the injector and I couldn't take it any more. :)
Anyway, the current horror stories surrounding Jeeps in general have put me off Jeeping again. My mechanic would disown me, yet here I am enquiring again. What can I expect? I'm looking at finding a second hand diesel with quadra lift.

I’m in the minority here, owning the petrol V6 but I have been impressed by the vehicle’s reliability and comfort. I actually purchased it 4 years ago today.

Jeep and my dealer have been mostly good, save for a recent experience with my dealer that has soured my opinion of them. In almost all cases, they’ve been good and responsive.

I had a drivetrain issue about 2 years back, a manufacturing defect had affected the driveshaft but it was dealt with pretty well by Jeep and the dealer.

The pentastar is bloody solid. I’ve never wished for more power, but I don’t tow a camper trailer or caravan. It’s very efficient on the highway. I’d get close to 900km a tank if I was willing to really test it out.

Off road it is highly capable too. I’ve taken it through some pretty rough and very steep terrain and it has performed beautifully. It doesn’t have lockers but the few times I’ve needed it, the BLD has worked well.

To be honest, there simply isn’t another equally capable and comfortable 4wd vehicle available at this price, or anywhere near it in fact. It strikes a great balance, being a 4wd that drives like a car.

Love my WK2 and I’m sure you’d love it too if that’s what you choose

Done almost 100,000 Klm's in my 2014 Grand Cherokee Limited diesel, with not one problem at all. My client has the same model and has had 170,000 trouble free Klm's.
You do hear some problems but mainly from forums or the press.

Really happy with mine, especially the economy. Have averaged 8.5 Lt per 100 Klm's from new, including towing etc.

Ditto to every thing he said ^^^. Just had the 100,000 service and no issues with the MY14 Overland diesel.

Guess you'll be finding a new mechanic. ;)

LOL... yes, He's a Toyota man who serviced my Jeep and my current Land Rover. He keeps wanting me to go over to the dark side but Jap cars leave me stone cold, I don't know why. :)

Another thing that has held me back since they were released is the poxy position of the parking brake. I'm told I'll get used to it....

I don't know why the foot brake gets such a hard time on the GC. I don't see the general populous complaining about the foot brake on the Kluger as an example of what appears to be a double standard. You do get used to it - it really is not a problem.

I have the electronic park brake on the KL and while I don't mind that at all, an electronic brake never feels as 'safe' (probably the wrong word but you get my gist) as a good shove on a foot brake (as in our WK2) or a good pull of a hand brake (as in our old WH). Just my personal opinion though.

I've had foot parking brakes before and they aren't a problem in most cars. Grand Cherokees have traditionally been a little squeezed for left foot space due to the intrusion of the gearbox/transfer case into the foot well. The WJ was pretty awful in that regard. The WK2 seems a little better but the foot brake intrudes too much in an already cramped space in my opinion. My shin touches it in my normal driving position. I'll have to get a new normal driving position. :)
