viscous heater 2.7 crd - remove hi
Has anyone pulled out this pump viscous heater I'm in a hot country and I have no need for this nonsense If so what are the steps? |
It's not in use unless it's cold (under 15*C). You could use the belt setup from an ML maybe but I'm not sure what is the location of the other accessories.

I really don't see the point in removing it. When it is inactive, the clutch is disengaged and only the front pulley turns on a bearing. The bearing is a generic A/C bearing, can be purchased for around $30, is an easy DIY install, and lasts around 250,000km. Everything else on the heater seems pretty bullet-proof.
Frankly, removing it looks like a lot of pain for little gain. Plus, you never know when you (or a future owner) might do a trip to the Victorian high country and find it useful. Just my opinion, and I know not what you were asking for. |
What about the possibility of swapping the heater for an AC compressor for tyre inflation...had a set up like that in an old landcrusier and was great for airing up off road. Every time i lift the hood on my grand i remember,,,much quicker than the 12v compressor, and it can run for ages.

That's one option, would take quite a bit of work though. And there's not a lot of space behind the heater :(

With the electric compressors available from the likes of ARB now, is that bang for your buck?
|
Good points, the size of the compressor would be an issue, and the electric jobs do have good output. The main good point with the compressor is the huge output and almost continuous duty compared to 12volt.I have a 2 cylinder 12v job and it is good , if the ambient temp is hot its duty cycle soon becomes an problem.Obviously for all the stuffing around required, most would not bother ,,but if you need a lot of air quick and continuous AC compressor is king.
I did test the viscous heater on my grand with the view of using it as the heat source to power a camping shower, but heat output didnt seem to be enough(sadly). |
