Whats the Diff?? Some time ago I uploaded a post to this forum that my '96 XJ LSD diff was worn out, the bill to replace the guts....$1800.
I had then thought it is probably time to trade her in, even Jeeps dont last forever!...this idea quickly disapperaed when I started to get trade in prices!!...no way could I scarifice this fourby for $3800 - $5400! I'm gunna keep it for another 12 years....so back to my crook diff...what are my options here?...some of you posted suggestions last time that I should look at a non standard replacement, ie an Air Locker or Detroit locker, I know either will cost a bit more then $1800 but lets hear some comments; a, Air Locker (including onboard air)? b, Detroit Locker? c, Some other locking diff? d, Original equipment replacement? e, None of the above, stay with the worn out diff 'cause it will still go where others fear to tread? Whats the good the bad and the ugly of this lot? Thanks in advance. Paul BrixXJ |
A detroit locker or detroit tru-trac (gear driven LSD) wont cost $1800...unless that quote includes your labour? air lockers will cost more that the Detroits, since it needs a compressor and extra wiring and airlines.
If you are after an LSD than a Detroit tru-trac i would recomend. It wont wear out like the clutch packed LSD (such as trac loc). The tru-tracs perform comparable to lockers under most circumstances. just in another thread i read people have said they got them for around $500-600, i paid $900 for my front 12 months ago, and $400 labour to get it fitted with 4.11 gears (total $1300). I also have a tru-trac in my rear D35. Needless to say, i would not recomend the stock trac-loc LSD when cheaper/comparably priced options that are better are out there. |
Check this thread, it's got ideas for your D35.
