Smart Alternators

G'day Lads,

yes, they have been since 2007, but with Chrysler ECU software they're a drawback and killing the outstanding battery (CRD)

my 07 diesel unit did not look very smart when I pulled it out, usual amount of wires and no weird looking crap hanging off it, BUT I bet whatever it hooks up to has voodoo stuff attached.
It has an overrun pulley which will rattle before it shits itself.
Optima battery must be kill proof, its a few years old now..

Optima D31A is used in USAF ground support equipment and reported to last 8 years on average. My JK chewed 3 of them lasting under 3 years each dying always after hot days. I worked out the problem and kinda fixed it: http://www.ausjeepoffroad.com/forum/...66&postcount=1

No...... its a plain constant output unit. Controlled by the TIPM.

If your in doubt put a volt meter ( or OBD reader ) on it and go for a long drive - you'll see the voltage never falls below 14ish ....

On the 3.6's the alternator output is controlled by the PCM.
There is a table in the software for it.
Output is regulated versus battery temp not ambient temp.
As the battery gets hotter, charge voltage is lowered...

That's not what a so called "smart alternator" does...... they actually shut down periodically and the vehicle runs on the battery. Also the battery charge level can vary significantly from traditional charging systems which always aim for a full charge. As you can imagine this can cause issues with second battery systems so its a topic of some importance with some vehicles when fitting second batteries.
