Stubby bull bars, legal in Qld Are the stubby bull bars legal in Qld. Does anyone have a link to ADR's stating they are or not?

The link below was issued in 98 but it is still current. http://www.google.com.au/url?sa=t&rc...Zn3qJvGlYH22fw |
Well well well, look what Jeep are doing with the JL (from the leaked manuals):
http://www.ausjeepoffroad.com/forum/...43811ea6d3.png Hopefully it opens the door to stubby bars, similar to the way JK's can run without mudflaps. |
I'd doubt it. Just because it's rated for US JLs it doesn't mean it will be ADR approved here with that bumper.

I'm betting the version AUS get will have the front bumper as seen in these pics, which is in line with what the JK in the US and our JK has already. I don't believe stubby bars will ever be legal, if anything the regulation will get tighter :-/

The funny thing with ADRs is that there isn't anywhere that I've been able to find that states how short the front bar can be, only that the ends must be capped. The only time it mentions the length of a front bar is that it can't be longer than the vehicle is wide. However it does state that it must conform to the shape of the body of the vehicle. So you can't have a dead straight bar across a vehicle that curves around. The only place it states that it must be full width is in the State's Code of practice for light vehicles. |
Not certain but I think the drama here is that the bumper must be tested and prove
to provide sufficent protection of the driver from injury resulting from steering column displacement. The bumper may well do so, however FCA would struggle to justify running multiple tests when they can just run one. |
Doubt we'll see that bumper out here. Just like the JK & TJ, we'll get hideous ends for the stock bumper.

EVO MFG 1/4 pounder, roughly 60mm cut off the chassis to push it back. Fitted with a Runva 11XP.http://www.ausjeepoffroad.com/forum/...d238d09c27.png

I went with the Rugged Ridge Spartacus front bumper, which give you european/Aus style removable end caps to comply with the ADR's on the road and the flexibility to take them off when wheeling (back bumper replacement next on the list)http://www.ausjeepoffroad.com/forum/...0dddedd8cd.jpg

I was initially going for a J8-style bare-bones bumper look but this project grew legs and ran: That is the metal bar that sits under the stock plastic park bench bumper, Tixo D-ring mounts, Class 10.9 M12x60mm 1.25p bolts with class 10 nuts, homemade end-caps bolted on because I don't have a welder with 4" LED lights in place of fog lights that are also work as DRLs thanks to my Procal, a winch mount meant to clear a stock plastic bumper and since the winch now covers so much of the grille, a Defender-style mesh grille. Since my round driving lights would block the indicators, I replaced them with a 20" light bar that fits nicely between the bumper and winch plate. |
Nice!

I'm looking to ditch the plastic park bench and replace it with either the AEV or Offroad Animal but having a bit of a hard time deciding - the AEV looks to be a premium / better quality product compared to the ORA but with the skid plate and winch mount it ends up about $1000 more expensive. Plus the bar looks to be more than 10kg heavier than the ORA.
I tend to prefer the looks of the AEV but the reduced weight and cost of the ORA are also attractive. Are there any particular reasons that one is better or worse than the other? |
I think the AEV has ADR certification, I do not know about the ORA. (Could matter for insurance, or if you get pulled over by someone looking for excuses)
|
The ORA website mentions ADR compliance but I haven't seen anything similar for the AEV. I'm assuming that if it's full width and the recovery points are mounted underneath it's less likely to be pinged and this is important for me, I don't need the hassle with plod or insurance.

Aev has better build quality imo and is a bit more solid hence the extra weight. But I like the styling of the ORA bar. I went with the round hoop over the sharper lines of the other & happy with the outcome.
ORA will hopefully have better local support if you have issues. Sent from my SM-N960F using Tapatalk |
I also prefer the round hoop option on the ORA over the stealth hoop so that would be my choice too. Did you fit the factory fog lights?
|
Yes mate I did.

I ended up going with the Offroad Animal - weight, price and availability were the biggest factors over the AEV. I also had a winch and lightbar fitted and replaced the stock headlights and foglights with LEDs.

This is the Uneek Baja bar with tow hooks and winch plate. It's very sturdy and very well made, as you would expect from a Uneek product. It's around 10-12cm narrower per side than the stock fender flares - not quite full length but not mid length either. It came with silver M12 class 8.8 bolts, which I replaced with black 1/2" grade 8 bolts. The winch bolts onto the top of the bumper and the bumper bolts onto the front of the frame horns only, so the grade 8 bolts' extra strength and hardness give me a little more peace of mind. |
