WH CRD Engine Oil

I've done a bit of research on this but can't find a clear answer to this specific question on the forum. It's probably there, just not searching the right terms ;)

Anyway, so being that the 2006 (through 2008?) WH CRD does not have a DPF, does this mean we don't need to run an oil meeting MB 229.51 specification?
Any (decent) oil meeting MB 229.5 specs will be suitable?

Looking on the Castrol site vehicle lookup, they specify Castrol EDGE 5W-30 LL with DPF (229.51) or CASTROL EDGE 0W-40 / 5W-40 A3/B4 without DPF (229.5).

The 2007 Jeep Owners Manual specifies: SAE 5W-30 Synthetic Engine Oil that meets Chrysler Material Standard MS-11106 or Mercedes Benz MB 229.51 and ACEA C3 qualified engine oils.
Again though I would expect this is with DPF.

So my real question (deduced from the above), what are the thoughts on using CASTROL EDGE 5W-30 A3/B4 which meets MB 229.5 specification?

The reason I ask about this specific oil is it's often on sale for half price and I've been using Edge in my racecar and WJ GC for years and been very happy with it. So being we need 10lts per oil change, and you can often get 5lts on special for around $35-40, it's a big saving over other options.

Thoughts?

I ran Penrite HPR 5 Engine Oil 5W-40 MB 229.5 spec for years
Great oil

My personal opinion is Valvoline and Caltex thin out to much when hot.
Had oil light come on under heavy load (towing) with both these brands.

Hi Clarky, was that with Castrol Edge or Magnatec?
I vaguely remember reading you were running Magnatec at some point?

Hi.
Another option is the E9 spec, truck engine oil.

Shane,
i went through the same questions as you did when i had to change my oil, i did a lot of research and asked in oil forums about it and downloaded the full certification/specification of what each spec has and spent hours pouring through it..

You've got the gist of it mostly, without DPF you can run 229.5
BUT the newer the spec the better quality the oil, that means 229.51 and .52 are much better oils than the "old" ones, in all respects.

I ended up going with Valvoline European Vehicle Full Synthetic XL-III that's 229.5 because Castrol is unholy expensive in my country.

The ones in my list from Castrol are Castrol EDGE 5W-30 LL for 229.51 and the Castrol magnatec for 229.5, i don't have the CASTROL EDGE 5W-30 A3/B4 in it(maybe because i filtered out due to availability)

I spoke to Castrol Customer Service her in Aus a few days back and they suggested Edge 5W30 A3/B4 should be fine so I'm going to give it a go hopefully this weekend (if it doesn't bloody rain again lol).

The factory spec oil is a 5W30 so I figure it should be fine. If not then I'll just change it again and treat this as a flush/clean. The oil that's in it right now is black as night and feels a bit thick.
