Commander Front Driveshaft

Hi all,

On the way back from Albany to Perth I noticed a vibration at high speeds and a clicking sound at low speeds. When I got home I traced it back to a split CV boot which allowed the grease to get out and the dirt in on the Front Drive shaft CV at the transfer case end.

Has anyone else had this issue and if so did you just replace the CV or the entire shaft? And where did you get the replacement parts from?

Also my Commander is an 06 and I remember reading somewhere that the front drive shaft changed on the 07 or 08, why was it changed and if it is a stronger/better option, how hard is it to upgrade the 06 to the 08?

Cheers

Also are you able to remove the front drive shaft and continue to drive the car RWD only?

The same thing happened to the front drive shaft on my 2007 Grand WH CRD a couple of years ago, it was a week out of warranty:) and Jeep Australia refused to acknowledge the part would have still been within it's expected life span.

Anyway, at that time I couldn't get a CV Joint Kit as this was not available in Australia and, I believe this is still the case....so I had to buy the whole front shaft which cost around $800.00. Mine went while I was traveling so had no choice but to fix it.

When I eventually got home I found a site in USA where you can get just the complete CV Joint. It cost AU$103 but that was when the aussie $ wasn't as good as today.

So I decided to get it so I could have a spare front driveshaft, the part was here in around 2 weeks.

So if you can hold off and wait for the part you'll save a few $$. At the time the mechanic said they could have packed it with grease to get me on my way but I would have had to check it each day and repack. As I still had a fair way to get back home I didn't go down this path. This may be an option for you if you don't need to travel too far.

This is the site:

Are the part numbers the same for a complete driveshaft between these for the petrol and diesel and well as for the WH? Just wondering if the length was the same as I need a longer one for my project.

Looks like I found the answer here.

They sell and a pair of CV too. Might be worth comparing freight costs with the other link.
