TJ Gearbox oil - i want an answer : ) I have done heaps of searches on this with no real answer, so ive put up a poll to see what the majority of people are using, i have just bought some castrol mutitrax but want to find out if anyone has used it wihtout problems... this is for the 5 speed box by the way..
|
whatever is on sale! gearbox oil is gearbox oil, dont need any fancy shi t
|

for 5 speed transmissions Castrol multitrax or if a ax15 gearbox, engine oil but agree fancy boutique oils tend to be over rated except for extreme conditions I use the MOPAR Manual Transmission Lubricant part number 04874464. but thats because because I have a six speed which seems fussy about lube and dont know enough about the affects on this transmission with after market equivalents and only need to change it every 50K's I wouldn't just put any shi t in, even in my whipper snipper. |
ok.. if you think its not good advice.. thats cool.. but his 5 speed is an ax15 and are an old style 5 speed box.. there is no need to spend big bucks on oil for it.... you would be just wasting your money.. spend less and change it more often..
|
oh ok, so its only the newer 6 speeds which require this rare exotic gearbox oil refined by monks in the bottom of volcanoes in siberia?
|
thats about right. if you have the old ax15, a plain old sae 30 engine oil will do. have heard if you use a gearbox specific oil in these transmissions, it chews out the alloy in the synchros.
for the other 5 speeders, Castrol Multitrax. |
well how the fook do i know whaty i have in my 2002 wrangler? i thought it was a NVsomethingorother
|
well thort yours was a 99..lol
|
2002 has a NV3550. I put Multitrax in there, hasnt blown up yet.
Remember kiddies - it's not what oil you use, it's how often you change it that counts... |

useful lube specs about Wrangler transmissions here, includes all the different transmissions including autos

Used Castrol for years but changes were "chunky". Last change went to Redline which has improved the smoothness of the change - have the AX15 box -
Whats cheaper - a decent oil or a new box ... . . . |
Did my ax15 gear box yesterday with Royal Purple Synchromax and it has already made quite a difference to the shifts - where first and second used to be quite stiff they are now shifting much smoother
|
from what I understand the ax5 and ax15 gearboxes require a GL3 oil.
therefore according to Royal Purple and other Jeep forums a straight 10w-40 engine oil should be used in these transmissions in lieu of Synchromax, otherwise the synchros will slowly destroy themselves. |
Agree about the GL3.
I researched this yesterday before getting the oil and from reading on this forum and some US sites I understand synchromax is compatible with GL3 and is used frequently in ax15 boxes |
Mechanical clutz question again ... is Redline oil fine in any gearbox? Don't know what's in my '05 TJ but I'm keen to use only the best of the best.
Tried to buy some at Repco today but they didn't have it. Where do you buy this liquid gold? |
there's a Bursons near me that sells it.
make sure you have some gold bullion to buy it |
i put multitrax in and gear changes a noticably alot more sticky, and i find myself grinding gears alot, ill be changing to redline soon...

Autobarn sells it .. helps if you know someone that works there, get it for cheaper cause its expensive .. |
Yikes boys, how much does it cost & how much does a girl need? Rang Autobarn & the bloke sounded like he'd never heard of it ... said they don't carry it.
|
my gear changes are pretty ordinary atm, second tends to crunch when the jeep is cold... is the verdict to go with redline gearbox oil? is there a specific type?

Cheers Roo, I'll try again ... pimply faced 17yo knobs working in auto shops who don't know about cars sums it up very well. I always get a kick out of their expressions when they carry my stuff to the car, priceless!
Because of the last clown I ended up buying Penzoil or whatever it's called but have held off putting it in. |

Think the only difference in the oil is the MTL is slightly thinner for the newer 5 speed. I have MT90 in my NV3550 by accident and runs fine, at $126 for just under 4lt it can stay there a bit longer, I needed 2lt for mine. |
my two cents....Redline MTL for the NVs...Redline MT-90 for the AX-15....and Mopar ATF+4 for the AW4 Cheros
|
Ok.
(Q) How many litres for the gear box. (Q) how many litres for transfer case. 2003 TJ 5 speed. cheers piggy |
Damn Piggy, way to bring up an old thread! Hey can I come around on the weekend and do mine too? Mine's due for an oil change... ;)

http://www.jeep4x4center.com/knowled...capacities.htm FWIW I bought my 1998 TJ 5-speed and it was very, very hard to shift into second when cold, and crunched when warm. I thought I was going to have to rebuild or replace the box. Changed to Redline MT-90 and within a few hundred k's the issues were gone completely. 12 months and 10,000k later... still no issues. |
Hey mate would the Redline MT 90 work for my 6 speed manual?

Use Redline MTL for the six speed.
|
Is there a certain spec for the mlt? Thanks for the help
|
|
Thanks mate!
|
Just re-read this thread and realised my jeep has been running royal purple in the ax15 gearbox for 6 years. Shifts are still good so the synchromax hasn't effed the synchro's after all
|
$109 delivered for 1 gallon of MTL off e-bay ............. not too bad I recon
