ECU mount problem

Hi,

Just fixed a strange rattle that developed under the bonnet:-

It was the ECU lower mount that had fatigue "torn" the inner guard where the bolt goes through. Seems due to resonant vibes overa long period. Maybe a diesel thing, maybe not, not sure if all XJs share the same ECU mounting.

Checking the ECU mount out, seems there are only two bolts so the whole thing is prone to vibrate and work fatigue the metalsince it is not held firmly in three dimensions.

Fix was to pull out ECU and paint inner guard with cold gal to stop rust. Added some "mudguard washers and bolt back up.
Then made a steel brace to give a third mounting point so the whole thing doesn't resonate and shake.

ECU mount problem

Hi,

No problem not knowing what things are here.... This is a list to share info. This is the whole reason I post such little "gems" I find... so others can use info learned the hard way. Please ask away anytime you aren't sure. What goes around comes around.

The ECU is the engine control computer (Engine Control Unit). Also known by various other names depends on which manufacturer you are talking of.

In the XJ diesel it is located on the (RHD) driver's side under the hood behind the air filter box. Looks like a rectangular box with a wad of wires going in the front side (nearest the air cleaner) Mounted up on its edge at 45degrees headed back towards the brake master cylinder.

From the factory it is mounted by two bolts one a stud type through the wheel arch underneath it, the second is a screw through the inner guard.

If you are still unsure let me know and I will take a photo and post it. Come to think of it, I will take one anyway and post it, may take a week or so as I still use a camera with paper and chemical memory.

Cheers
