ABS and brake light come on then it gets weird

Hi Guys,
I have a weird situation with my CRD. A couple of times a day my brake and ABS light come on at the same time. Car seems to drive OK so not too worried but when these come on my overhead temp gauge and my odometer stop working.
Most of the time the lights come on when I hit a bump but sometimes they just come on for no reason.
Any ideas to fix the warning light issue and why I have these other issues?
Thanks,
Andrew (and have a good Christmas)

Alternator? Strange suggestion but my old Landcruiser did a whole heap of weird things when the alternator died.

Otherwise, ABS sensor? Any codes coming up if you do the key trick?

Yep has thrown some codes but that's another story............. OK

So 2 weeks ago I washed my jeep. No pressure washer just garden hose and a soft brush. Lifted the bonnet to wash some dust off the engine no mud just dust so it didn't take long. Next morning the engine light stays on while I'm heading off to work. Bugger. Turbo has de-rated but still goes OK from A to B.

Come back into phone range (I use my KJ for work) and ring my mechanic up in Orange (CW NSW) who wisely says don't drive it, bring it in and we will check the codes
P0299 Turbo underboost
P1252 Vacuum reservoir control circuit high

$550+ later and she's good to go. (Don't get me started!!!!!) Well apart from the ABS light.

Try and clear the codes and get it to fire a code. Otherwise check your battery and alternator connections and earth connections. Also check your abs sensors are secure and clean and the connections are good, and the abs controller conections are good too, if you can get the code it I will save you time.

^ this. We had similar lights come on, replaced the battery and all was well. It was the original optima, lasted nearly 10 years.

This appears to be a common problem according to the WWW. The best remedy is the ABS plug at the top of the rear diff can get frayed so repair or replace and these warning lights will dissapear.
