Hmm interesting, I double checked and apprently it was more like 3L that came out, it had been leaking for a while plus had to remove the cooler to fix something else so had lost a bit of oil there too. I assume the only way to dip stick it is to buy one from the UK or the US? I certainly haven't seen any in Aus! It will be a cheaper way to fix it though!

As fester said you shouldn't have any problem with the Penrite many others use it. Did you drop the pan and change the filter or just drain from the plug ??? When I do mine around 5lts comes out and goes back in.
I have mentioned it before but get a bit of flexi cable, like that wire curtain rod stuff, and dip the box, have it so it just touches the bottom of the pan if you have between 65 - 75mm all should be good, now thats cold on a flat surface.

I ended up with a $10 job off ebay and it does the job but the proper way you need the temp and use the chart in the manual, a pain to do. Oil from an MB place is cheaper than dealer.

I couldn't find anywhere (I didn't look to hard) that would supply the filter and be able to confirm it was the right one, so just drained from the plug. I will try the wire rod idea, its gotta be cheaper then the $130 + postage for a genuine Jeep one from the UK, I'll try to cheap eBay idea as a back up for later use too I think.

MB Spares in Canberra will have the filter at a reasonable price and you will be surprised what the pricing of stuff like that is from a Mercedes spare parts department as well. Should not need a part number at a MB dealer either as it is a hugely common box in MB cars. The part number however is in the 2.7 sticky thread on the front page. If you get the part number and Google it stacks of places to buy will come up. My last one came off ebay.

Ditto the dip stick tool is really commonly available on ebay, I think mine was about $20 posted. I don't think the UK Jeeps had a dipstick either and that is why it would be so dear from a dealer as it is a service department tool not a spare part. I was told by the local MB dealer that they were not even allowed to sell the genuine tool as it was not considered a customer option and they had to account for however many they ordered.

you will find the part numbers, the filter isn't very expensive from an MB dealer, I buy mine from MB Spares in Canberra about $45 I think but you have to use the MB part number. Basically a filter and gasket for a MB 722.6 transmission. You do need to change the filter though.

I bought my last filter and pan gasket from SD Europarts when I was ordering a load of other bits, pretty cheap overall.

Western Filters in Sydney will most likely stock these, a quick call will let you know.

FWIW, I'm also running the Penrite FS oil with no issues, previously I had ATF4+ and had no issues either.

So i tried a DIY dip stick, it was above 100mm, so lowered it down to about 73mm, still pretty noisy on the highway though :( thinking I will replace the filter and gasket, and refill with fluid (Found a place in QLD that will sell the dipstick). Only 2 weeks till my Cape trip so pretty keen to get it in the best condition before then!
