Timing belt kit recommendations I need to do the timing belt on my 05 CRD , over on the Jk side of the fence genuine VM seems to be the preferred choice, how about for the KJ ? VM or gates?

Most manufacturers don't make there own timing belts they buy them in from specialist belting manufacturers who package them in the auto makers packaging and part numbers from companies like Gates or Dayco or Bosch and there are plenty of others.
In my servicing I have always used either Gates or Dayco brands both reliable and respected belt brands and never had a premature failure or comeback. |
When changing the timing belt you should replace the tensioner and idler pulleys at the same time, so you might as well buy the lot at one hit from a VM specialist.

A few years ago I used a kit from Dayco that came with pulleys, tensioner and belt. The kit is around $400. The original belt that came on my 2006 Jeep KJ was Goodyear.
I also use Dayco for my Toyota Avalon that is now 17 years old. |
Yes try IDParts or VM Specialist UK. You should change the tensioner, and deoending on the kms maybe the water pump at the same time (its easy to do when the belt is off). IT IS CRITICAL THAT SOMEONE KNOWS WHAT THEY ARE DOING AS THE KJ CRD IS NOT THE SAME AS A JK CRD, AND SPECIAL TOOLS MAKE THE JOB MUCH EASIER AND LESS LIKELY TO SCREW IT UP. IF DIY, UOU MUST LOCK THE CAMS AND FLYWHEEL, USE WITNESS MARKS ON KEY SPOTS ON THE OLD BELT AND PULKEYS BEFORE YOU REMOVE THE OLD BELT. TRANSFER WITNESS MARKS TO THE NEW BELT BEFORE YOU INSTALL, AND INSTALL TO ALIGN. THE BELT MUST BE TIGHT BETWEEN THE INJECTION PUMP PULLEY AND THE CRANK PULLEY, YOU MAY HAVE TO BACK THE CRANK SLIGHTLY TO GRAB THE TOOTH. FAILURE TO INSTALL CORRECTLY CAN RUIN THE ENGINE.
