DIY Air tank Options
 

I have been thinking about putting in a small air tank and hardwiring my compressor in. Have seen the options available to buy new but starting thinking about what other sort of tanks could be used as a DIY project.

Have see many sorts of tanks including fire extinguishers, gas cylinders, etc etc. Anyone know if any of these could be modified to make it into a suitable tank (or even safe to do so)?

Safety Note
All gas cylinders have a shelf liife 10 years before it must have a inspection if i were using any stored pressure cylinder i would use one that had a working pressure far greater than your intended presure a old hi pressure gas cylinder will have a far greater wall thickness than a lpg or non co 2 type fire extinguisher cheers M

Check the fab & custom section. I have done it using a 240v compressor tank and swiches and adapting the 12v pump to suit.

Check out Hunty's version - he used a front Tube bullbar and sealed it up and made it his air tank :)

I bought a tank from the tip for 5 bucks. It is a medical oxygen tank from BOC. 490 lts filled to 16.3mpa (2364.1145100000003 psi) so no worried going to 150 psi. Think it might be alloy. Still had a lot of o2 in it when I got it home and opened the valve. Was wonderingif it would be ok to weld in the plug for the air fittings etc.

Pretty happy with wiring, pressure switch etc.

With that size tank where are you going to mount the sucker, XJKEE?

yes this is all about doing it safely also, which is why I was considering using the below tank. It's dimensions are 410mm length, 115mm diameter. my compressor is a twin pump 150psi Repco brand bought on special a few months ago as the old one i had decided not to work anymore.
