Grand Cherokee turned to 'dust'

Anyone seen the ridiculous news item about a 2013 GC that blew up after a fuel pump failure, and the owners have been quoted almost 40k to have it fixed?
Of course FCA doesn't want to help, that car is obviously well out of warranty.

Surely the vehicle in question could have a second hand engine & accessories fitted for a lot less than the quote from the dealer?

They are carrying on like it's impossible to fix and the car is to be scrapped.

Did they actually buy it new.
2013 model purchased in 2015 if I remember correctly.
Typical Jeep bashing even though I feel for them.

Its a punishing outcome for anyone let alone a young family.

Saw that as well, I think it was a petrol job as mention was made of fuel pump in tank, about $500 for new pump from Rockauto and a recon donk fitted would be less $$$ I would have thought, though all I could imagine that would need replacing would be cleaning and/or replacement of fuel system. Might have a look at my manual as it has it in its 9,000 pages.............
Certainly would make me add a good filter between pump and engine if I had one but that engine has been around for a hell of a lot of years and the pump possibly longer and never heard of similar before but as usual FCA needs to get a better PR people, if they have any been rubbish for decades ....... Imagine the PR Coup they would have got if they went halves in sorting it out, it really wouldn't have cost them very much at all as their quoted price would have been over done by about 45% ................... way cheaper than the dumb adds they do ...........

Way back in the analogue days when Jeep was here they had a crap reputation then when they came back its still the same.... Morons

Is the fuel filter system the same on petrol as the diesel models? Hard to imagine much getting through the twin 3 micron filters on the diesel if the fuel pump fails.

The pricing in this article has to be inflated dealer pricing, I'm not sure I've ever seen a mechanics rate of $170 per hour.

I'd like more details, if it was a petrol engine I'd doubt it'd be that expensive to fix.

I’d lay “pounds to peanuts” it’s a diesel and the great expense will be renewing the hp pump, rails, sensors, and injectors amongst anything else the dealer can add on.
