Gear Box Woes - help please!
 

Hei all;

I have a 1997 Grand Cherokee Limited edition - in pretty good shape as it has only done 177K. However recently it has gone into 'limp-mode' so i'm currently only driving it on local roads at low speed (towing the boat etc) shifting like a manual (and without overdrive or kick down functioning).
The issue seems intermittent - some days (after not being driven for a while) it drives normally, then after a while drops back into limp mode. Diagnostics say it is a shifter solenoid issue and my mechanic and auto-electrician say it will cost more to fix than the value of this ageing vehicle.

Does anyone have suggestions that I can try myself? For instance is it worth flushing the automatic transmission fluid - or are there any standard tricks to check the wiring etc (bearing in mind that I am wonderful at fixing wooden sailing boats but know nothing about engines!).
