For those who have installed aftermarket stereo, what is required?

My stereo (old chinese unit) looks to be on the way out and I am looking for a replacement. Likely the Alpine ilx-107 as me and my partner are both iPhone people. I am just wondering what is exactly required to hook up as seamlessly as possible?

From reading I require a harness for steering wheel controls to work.

I personally pushed the boat and went a little further getting the Alpine i207-WRA from the States through Amazon.

Shipping and taxes mean that you pay a bit more but this is a complete plug and play solution designed for the Wrangler to replace the stock unit (everything you need in the box). Mine works flawlessly (the only exception being that the vehicle data window (temp, rpm etc) doesn't work as US Wranglers are wired differently, and the door open graphics are opposite for left hand drive vehicles).

Those functions you don't need to use though and for carplay I couldn't recommend the unit highly enough.

Interesting! I thought the inbuilt Maestro Module in the i207 means it should get all the data? This is what I have been reading. Price isn't bad considering the plug and play.

Unfortunately I'm not technical enough to understand the ins and outs but I believe its something to do with the US and Euro/Aus models having different configurations in the inputs into the module(?)

The only feature that does return a value is speed, but that only reads as MPH and there's no way to change it in the software. I got in touch with Alpine but the response was that as the unit was designed for the US market there is no intent to support the rest of the world at this time.

Fair enough, bit of a shame considering the premium price. But really appreciate the input!

I recently did my stereo on my new-to-me 09 JK and the PO just went wild with the good ol' boy wiring so that was a mess. The worst case is you have to match some wires and clamp/solder/fasten them to each other - is really not bad at all.

But it looks like you will have no issues there. Few bolts for the dash and out and in. You will need the Double Din mounting plates - pretty sure they even have those at SuperCheap. Then just re-bolt the dash and off you go.
