Mobil 424 superceded

Mobil 424 has been superceeded by Mobil 428. Ok for use in the transfer case and steering of the WHs .

I've just come across the same problem, 424 out of stock everywhere and dealers are telling me 428 has replaced it. Looking to do my WJ transfer case.

If you check the product spec sheet though, the viscocity is different so im worried this aint the same oil and reluctant to be the guinea pig especially when these boxes are known to be picky !

Mobil 424: Density @ 15 C, kg/l, ASTM D4052 = 0.880

Mobil 428: Kinematic Viscosity @ 40 C, mm2/s, ASTM D445 - 59
Mobil 424: Kinematic Viscosity @ 40 C, mm2/s, ASTM D445 - 55

Mobil 428: Viscosity Index, ASTM D2270 = 141
Mobil 424: Viscosity Index, ASTM D2270 = 145

Mobil 428: Flash Point, Cleveland Open Cup, °C, ASTM D92 = 243
Mobil 424: Flash Point, Cleveland Open Cup, °C, ASTM D92 = 198

Mobil 428: Pour Point, °C, ASTM D97 = -48
Mobil 424: Pour Point, °C, ASTM D97 = -42

Maybe we have an oil / hydraulic fluid expert in here though...

Glad I bought a full case of bottles of the 424!

Digian...Mate I am no expert either, but after reading through the data sheets you kindly put the link up for, it appears to me that the 428 is being offered as an improved 424. Agree with your point about the transfers being picky, so it does put a bit of a cloud over useing the 428. But looks like we dont have much choice. So anyone who has used the 428 hopefully will post how they got on with the new fluid.....fingers crossed, we might be worried about nothing.

I have 2 x 1 litre bottles of Mobil 424 on the shelf here...bought it for my WH if anybody wants them. I am Northside Brisbane.
I also have a transfer case (no motor) for a WH complete with a new bearing kit open to reasonable offers...
.

The facts are that in all Mobils info the 428 is a direct replacement for the 424.
Mobil 424 will not be available when stock is sold out. When you look at what equipment this hydraulic fluid is and can be used in ,there shouldnt be a problem.!
The major problem for years was oil company catalogues were showing ATF fluid as
ok.it wasnt thats when TCs were failing.Have put the 428 in my 2010 WH and wouldnt expect a problem. 200000 ks with 424 previously no problems.

Hi.
Are Petronas products available to you lads? I am guessing they are.

They offer a product for our NV245 transfer case.It is called Petronas Tutela Powergear4. It lists MS-10216.

It is what the UK Jeep dealers were selling. I have it in my 2008 transfer case and it works just fine. It is after all 'just' a Tractor fluid.

Here is the technical data sheet for comparison.

https://epliportal.pli-petronas.com/...anguageCode=EN
