Jeep Grand Cherokee 2015 - Salt water crossing

Hi guys,

I got caught by the tides on Moreton over the weekend and had no choice but to drive through salt water. The water was approx halfway up the rims and the crossing took maybe 1 minute or less. I've been told by some that I should get the riffs drained and refilled. Others have said it's not neccessary. Any advise would be much appreciated as I'm concerned what damage I may have caused or will cause if I leave it. Cheers Nathan

I honestly don't think there will be an issue. I've had to do it myself in a JK Wrangler in a lot deeper water than that with the water over the bonnet without a problem.

However if you are worried just undo the fill plug on your diffs and stick your finger in. You should be able to get enough on your finger to tell if you have had any water ingress.

If the oil is clear then don't worry, if it is milky, than get your diffs drained and re-filled as soon as possible.

If it's only half way up the rims you should be fine, where are the breathers on the new Grands?
If it was half way up the doors, then maybe a different issue.

@Grippy not sure where breathers are located

You really ought to spray the underside of the car with fresh water to get all the salt out. A garden hose is the easiest but a proper spray booth is best. If you don't all the exposed bits of metal will begin to rust.

All your diffs, transfer case etc will have breathers.

Will be fine, give it a rinse when you get a chance.

Find a fresh water crossing and drive through that a dozen times or so, that should give it a good rinse

The first 2 time should be enough to rinse off the salt the other 10 are just for fun
