Start won’t run Hi all I’m new to this forum and I need some help I have recently purchased a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited from a wrecker it was a none goer I have put a new battery in it and a new fuel pump the car will start but only runs for a couple of second then stops I have tried some of the work arounds off YouTube but didn’t do any good I’m not sure if it has a skim module in it or not the ignition looks different to the ones on YouTube that do have a skim module I would really like to get this car running so any help would be much appreciated
Regards Geoff |
Sounds like a Skim type issue. Maybe source a matching key, skim module and ecu from another source, or have the skim function turned off in the ecu this can be done by sending it to specialist companies that advertise on line.

Thank you, thank you. If you have been following my thread on the ZJ (jeeping again)I had the same problem after an engine teardown. The comment from Classic Boy twigged my memory that I had the same problem. Just as an experiment I locked the car, then unlocked it and tried the key. The engine burst into life. :o

What code do you get, P1686? My thoughts are if it has SKIM then a SKIM code should throw. I think ……
I think AUD version got the SKIM or at least could be optioned. I’m thinking the only course of action might be a SKIM delete but you’ll need a replacement ECU/PCM and instal appropriately. Might be a work in progress, but you should be able to find a suitable unit on fleabay or the interweb at a reasonable price provided you’re not in too much of a hurry. I think it is important to note that a '96 Grand Cherokee is NOT a '96 Cherokee, and may or may not have an immobiliser fitted
As a for instance of the situation, a '96 XJ Cherokee does NOT have an immobilser, a '97 DOES, and its a "one-off" (just for Australia), then from '98 on a different system is used (to the best of my research) therefore the setup on an Australian '96 Grand Cherokee ZJ would best be addressed in the Grand Cherokee forum I acknowledge it may be very difficult to find someone with definitive info on this topic |
