WH 5.7lt Exhaust questions hey there fellow Grand owners
just picked up my 2006 WH limited 5.7lt and just wondering does anyone one have any opinions/options in regards to full exhaust upgrades or cat back upgrades, im in the country and unfortunatly dont have a good exhaust place i would trust with my Grand, if it was my old HQ no probs lol any help would be great |

I went down the same path as you looking for a system that would produce a nice burble with no drone at highway speeds. The Dealership wanted to fit the Mopar 300C sports system which is a manifold back replacement - cost is around the $3,500 mark plus fitting. When I put the acid on them they admitted it would drone and that performance and fuel economy would improve only if I also had the Mopar cold air intake fitted at a cost of around $1,800 plus fitting. A bit pricy for no guaranteed benefits - specially when they admitted that they had not previously fitted this kit to a WH Hemi. Didn't want to be the test case so I discussed muffler mods with my local Ozfit (who has been in the exhaust & brake trade for 42 years) and has changed a few previous Jeep systems for me. He recommended removing the 4 foot main muffler & replacing with a 30 inch long, 7 inch diameter round truck type muffler and retaining the rear resonator. He advised me that the stock cats are high flow, so only wasting money changing them & the rest of the system is free flowing 3 inch - all the congestion is in the main muffler (which makes it sound like a 4 cylinder). This simple mod which cost $280 has given my 2007 Hemi Limited an exhaust note to kill for and in the process lowered my around town fuel consumption by a little over 2 litre per 100ks. I know the brand is Lukey, I'll ask Les what the model number is and post in a follow up. The Dealership has commented about how great it sounds. Makes me wonder about all the Mopar mods they wanted to sell me because they have also admit that a 300C Demo with it fitted droned to the point where the sound system could not drown it out. |
I have also been looking at this for a while my local performance workshop quoted around the $2000 mark for a 3" cat back system made to fit. Or ordering a system from the US but the freight is a killer for an item that size. So oldgringo's option looks good as there is a carline that fits Lukey local here. I know that Lukey also does high flow resonators so that might be an option for later. Oldgringo if you cant get the part number could you get a picture and some dimensions co I can try to match it up localy.

Never order a system (or anything for that matter) from USA and ship by UPS or FEDEX, use United States Postal Service (USPS) whereever you can- its up to half, sometimes 1/3rd the costs. I had some headers for the 360 shipped from us, together with the USPS freight it still came in at around 60% the cost quoted to have a system made here. AND came with all bolts flanges, gaskets etc, and was an easy bolt up fit. No doubt you could find a similar set up for a grand in the US. |
I could understand ordering headers from the US but pipes and mufflers ?? You could source them here surely, though some of these "Specialist Places" charge like a wounded bull when the local BP workshop has the same item at less than half.

Just got under the GC with verniers & a tape measure; the muffler is a Lukey Sports performance, 24 inches long, 6 inch diameter, 3 inch pipes. Every sticker is still on it except the small one with the part number. Lukey mufflers are now marketed through Walker - already knew that, but the sticker confirms. At the time I asked about changing the stock resonator - he said "don't, the stock is a good one, change or remove it and the exhaust will crackle & pop". There was a reason - something to do with the body design and acoustics. I catch up with Les (Ozfit) at least weekly, so I'll get the part number from him Monday. |
