2014-2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee gets a software update to stop rollaways

http://images.hgmsites.net/tmb/2014-...00415338_t.gifIn April of this year, following an investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles recalled more than 1.1 million vehicles to address a problem with their shifters. For some of those vehicles--namely, the Jeep Grand Cherokee--we now know that the fix involves a software update to prevent them from...

A soft ware change is going to cure stupidity!
I dont think so.
Until we have driver-less cars there will be no complete solution.
They could just ban stupid drivers.
All these interlocks & other electronics were not needed in years gone by.
Just ban stupid people from driving.

I have to agree with Layback40.
I'm getting pretty intolerant of technology advancements revolving around protecting stupid people.
This is a typical example. Rather than go back to something which works, and everyone was satisfied with, no, we will just add more technology to make people even more stupid.
The truth behind most of this is more because some company is making billions out of it and it can be easily sold to the public who are addicted to technology, not because they really care about safety.
Makes me want to join the Amish!:-x

For me, the bottom line as far as FCA are concerned - they took a simple, intuitive, universally understood shifter style and made it more complex, less intuitive and changed the funtionality so it's not universally understood how to use it properly.

Yeah, operator error counts for these issues but this shift design was change for its own sake. We all make mistakes occasionally when rushing or tired or distracted. Increased complexity that confers no benefit other than wankery, yet creates an increase in user confusion is poor design, plain and simple.
