strange clunking sound possibly from gearbox when I engage gear and take off there is a clunking sound it sounds like it is coming from the gearbox it happens in drive and reverse only does it once my car has only done 15,000 km
I have just done a trip to Frazer Island and 550km around their noticed it after the trip also forgot to tell you I have an automatic |
Does it do it in 2wd or 4wd or both?
Without knowing anything more, I would check your rear drive shaft, check gearbox and transfer case mounts, check rear control arm bolts - thats a start anyway. |
I didn't notice it in 4wd but it may well what am I checking for looseness
|
Yeah, I havent experienced these noises in the Jeep, but have had similar in other vehicles. The rubber mounts for the gearbox was the cause in one, drive shaft in another. Diff trying to rotate as you engage gears will pull/push at the rear control arm mounts. So yeah, just generally check everything is tight.
Maybe even stick it in park so that the gear box is locked up and with the handbrake off try rocking the vehicle back and forth to see if the noise is there. |
it only happens when you first engage gear
|
re-tension ALL your control arm bolts.
How many KM has it done? I noticed my 545RFE got a bit clunky when it needed to be serviced. |

15,000 km I have not serviced my gearbox as it it is scheduled next service due to the low kilometres I do I don't think it is the control arm bolts as it only does it when you first engage and take off after that it doesn't make the sound |
