Haha. They didn’t change anything - I think they were just sloppy when they did the paperwork. That’s probably also why it was also launched with “MA” (passenger vehicle) certification, which meant lifts and bigger tyres weren’t legal. Obviously they got a lot of “feedback” about that and the tow rating so they revised and upped the unbraked tow rating and changed the classification to MC (off road). All KL Trailhawks originally plated as MA are now also recognized as MC. There was a lot of hoo-ha at the time because the Grand has the same MA/MC plating issue.

A bit of trivia for you - but basically both issues boiled down to FCA being lazy/stupid - nothing mechanical changed.

So when they changed the plate did the tow rating change.

I've had both. My current car is the KL Trailhawk, the Grand was a 2012 diesel. I fish a lot so my off road is limited to beach and driving on some very hairy tracks to get to good spots. The Grand had to be lifted 2" to prevent damage especially to the front, the KL handles the tracks without any issues but my driving is more careful these days.

I've never been bogged in either, touch wood, but i pay particular attention to correct tyre pressures driving on soft sand.

I confess being a Jeep nut and have owned different models over the years and love them all. My favourite was the JK Overland (between the Grand and the KL). My first was an abandoned 1948 CJ2A that I rebuilt when I was much younger long long ago.
