Wiring problem with replacing a complete headlight - 96 Grand Cherokee
 

Hi all,

I'm new to the forum so I have done a bit of a search on this subject on AJOR (and good ol Google) but no joy. I've got a 96 Grand Cherokee Laredo WG. The plastic cover on the passenger side headlight fell off one day and disappeared, I'm guessing due to ridiculous SA heat and age of the glue! So it still works fine but is not weather proof.

So I got a pair of new headlights from the US (eBay of course, silly me! But I'm not paying $350 for a single OEM part). The light itself fits perfectly but there's a wiring/plug incompatibility between the new bulb and the car's wiring. After consulting with my local Supercheap Auto store it seems the new light bulb has a 3 pin HB5 array (3 flat pins in an almost horizontal row), and the Jeep is wired for an H4 3 pin bulb (common as muck in AU). And no, I can't just switch the bulbs. Of course. :( And there is also no point in the wiring loom where there's a conversion from HB5 to H4 either.

What I need is a short length of connector/conversion wiring that's got an HB5 female plug at one end, and an H4 male connector at the other.

Has anyone else had this problem and found a simple solution? I have spent ages in spare parts/electrical stores/Google trying to find such a connector and whilst you can get every other kind of connector/conversion you can't get HB5-H4!!!

My only solution at this point is to buy the HB5 female parts and H4 connector parts/wiring separately and asking an auto electrician to solder the lot together to make a short piece of wiring with the two different plugs. Would this work or are there any other considerations I should make? Don't know a THING about auto electrics!

Unfortunately you have bought lights to suit the lhd cars. Even if you do adapt the wiring the low beam pattern flares up to the right and not the left as ours do. This will dazzle oncoming traffic and is quite dangerous.
It us a fairly common trap when sourcing lights overseas.

I reckon hid conversion kits come with the adapter you need, I did one recently and I reckon the hid plug was a hb5 pattern.
The other way is to just cut the plug off and fit a hb5 plug on.

But if it's a left hand drive light you will still have the low beam issue. Best to check that first.
