Diesel fuel economy

Thought I would start a fuel economy thread... Primarily for the diesel owners, but V6 owners feel free to chime in also. There are loads of people on various websites reporting their V6 fuel economy, but real-world fuel economy numbers for the diesel engine seem to be much harder to come by. Not unexpected, I suppose, seeing as the diesel isn't sold in the US.

For me, I'm generally getting low to mid 7's in everyday driving around Canberra. So, that's a real mix of slow city traffic and 60/70/80/90/100kph zones (yes, I experience all of those just on my short drive home from work!). Disclaimer -- I have cross bars installed on my roof rails and 225/65/R17 all-terrain tyres, which are slightly larger in rolling diameter than the stock tyres. I imagine both of these things have a slight negative effect on the fuel economy. Best I have ever achieved was 6.0 on the pancake-flat 100kph road between Melbourne and Geelong.

Strange thing to note... Most of the time I 'manually' calculate the fuel economy when I fill up at the servo, and most of the time it corresponds quite closely to what's shown on the EVIC. Since my first service, though, the EVIC is still showing low to mid 7's each tank, but my manual calculations now show low to mid 8's. This has been three consecutive re-fuels since the first service. Any ideas???

I'm averaging high 6's - low 7s but it hasn't seen a freeway in a month or more. Daily driving is avg speed 80-100 but never flat road, always up hill and down dale (semi-rural). A good freeway run (eg: down to Canberra 2 odd hours away), see's it drop to mid 5's.'

I don't really care to be truthful. I love the vehicle so much that if it went into the 8's I wouldn't mind. :)

Okay, so not exactly an overwhelming deluge of replies. :) Surely we can't be the only two KL diesel owners on this forum...?!

Anyhoo, mid-5s eh? SJetc, where are you coming from when you drive to Canberra? Are you literally driving down(hill), or is it flat and/or lumpy? Even on the Hume Hwy, say between Canberra and Albury (which I'd classify as rolling hills), I'll get high 6s at 110kph on cruise control. I feel like maybe my roofs racks and AT tyres have more of a negative effect on fuel economy than I realised.

On the EVIC/real world disconnect, my latest fill-up showed a closer correlation between the two, with 7.8 calculated manually and 7.6 on the EVIC. Current tank is showing 7.1. Almost feels like I've had to 'run in' the car again since the first service...!

V6 petrol TH for me with 245/70 r17 Duratracs and I average mid to high 10's on the daily commute (75km round trip with mixture of 60/80/100 amd a few traffic lights and roundabouts).

600km round trip from.Noosa to Byron Bay averaged 7.8 (on one tank). Was pretty stoked with that.

That's damn good economy for a petrol SC, better than I would expect. Don't know what my diesel does but riding the turbocharger regularly would not help, hey, I like getting up a good turbo diesel :)

Straight down the Hume from south of Sydney (I can see the Hume from the top of our hill lol). A quick trip to Bowral (40 mins), once I hit the Hume, sees a dramatic drop but its all flat and very smooth. :D
