Death wobbles
 

Hi peeps
My 09 jk has the dreaded wobbles,I have heard heaps of horror stories but no answers.any help would be a great relief to my ever shrinking wallet.

I had it a few weeks ago I to have a 09 jk
SBR offroad replace ball joints new tierod and drag link new steering damper. Problem fixed.

Tighten the shit out of your track bar bolts, Both times I head death wobbles it was the axle end track bar bolt not being tight enough.

I could be wrong here but I believe the factory bolt comes undersized (hole a tiny bit bigger then the bolt) which allows a tiny amount of extra movement if it isnt bull$hit tight.

There are plenty more things that can also cause it but why not try the simplest first?

I replaced mine with a slightly larger bolt and never had DW again.

If you do a search you will find lots of good information on diagnosing and fixing Death Wobbles.

It can be a single problem or a whole collection of small issues working together so be prepared to be systematic and just have to work through all the possibilities. If your looking for a "its always X" then your in for a rude shock.

One thing is ABSOLUTELY certain - a steering damper will not cause or cure death wobbles.... it will only mask the underlying issue(s) for a little while..... perhaps.

As Mobbzy mentioned. The bolt holes are a bit bigger than the bolts. This is due to Jeep drilling imperial holes then using slightly undersized metric bolts... :confused: I suspect someone there used to work at NASA on the Mars probes...

Just run some tow out 1.5 a side will put enough preload to fix it.

Tyre wear increase in minimal

That might cover the symptoms, but it doesn't fix the problem.

Which will continue to get worse until it returns even with that degree of toe out. Just the same as steering dampers don't fix it. They also just conceal the early symptoms, so that when it returns it is that much worse & the damage is that much greater & potentially more expensive to fix...
