Driving from melb to nhulunbuy
 

Hi guys I have a couple of questions. I will be driving from melb to nhulunbuy NT so a mix of normal road and tracks. I drive a jeep GC laredo 2013 2wd. My first question is what would be the best all terrain tyres I should use that will not suck up gas too much. Secondly, when do I use the sports mode in my car and when do I switch traction on and off and eco button on and off? Thanks all

Any standard all terrain will suffice for the terrain you're expected to travel. The tread pattern and brand will not effect fuel efficiency as much as the tyre pressure will, so run them higher on the highway, lower on the dirt.

As far as terrain mode to select, there will likely be mostly hard bitumen so set it to the most eco friendly type and let the miles drone away. There is not more than 250km between fuels stops, but be mindful that in northern SA and NT those distances there likely isn't anything else either.

There is no reliable fuel available on the central Arnhem road also be prepared to have a big hit to the economy when using opal fuel. I also would be very cautious driving this road during the wet season in a 2wd

IF fuel is available at beswick it is still over 600km of dirt that won’t have seen a grader since the start of the wet season.
The road is a lot better since a couple of bridges have recently been built however there will still be many creek crossings. If you are driving it in the next few months I would be keeping a close eye on the weather radar at every opportunity and be prepared to turn around.

Shep does opal fuel consume faster than your average petrol?

NTRubicon so you mean to switch the eco switch on. What would you say i should set my pressures at when on the highway and dirt? 38 for highway and 32 for dirt?

Yeah it is rubbish, my jk uses 2L more per 100km on opal.

I also have a 2017 wk2 diesel and just put it in drive. I wouldn’t worry about the different modes.
Also I wouldn’t bother dropping pressures as even though it is dirt you will want to be doing
100-110kph to deal with the corrogations.
