Spluttering Engine

Have noticed this a few times now usually after some 4wdriving but happened again on Saturday in the heat in Sydney.

Start the XJ up and the engine starts OK but the engine sounds like it is struggling. Almost like the idle is too low. Rev it a few times and seems to be OK again.

Any ideas?

Could be one of many things, but my guess would be bad fuel. Stick with the one brand, preferably a premium, and the computer adjusts itself to match.

Anything been changed just before this happened the first time? I have had that from using afermarket dizzy cap and rotor. Also has the fuel filter been changed? The CPS sensor can do things like this too.

dont know if this helps but once while slogging thru thick mud my XJ overheated and the engine was doing the same thing, running very rough and spluttering like it was going to cut out, i popped the bonnet and let her cool and it was fine, maybe a engine self preserving technique to stop it from melting down, i dont know, or maybe the heat makes the computer go crazy??

According to Jeep.. it's nothing serious.. But it annoys me too! Just driving round town does it to mine.. And it's stock standard.. only 42k and bought from new. Nothing added or done to it.. and it still stutters.. Also got a stuttter in the auto.. part throttle ropund 60-70k and it feels like the transmission is dumping the clutch (eg manual car) starting to get more frequent.. not happy jan!!!
