power steering disappears when turning left I'm not going mad and I hope someone may have an idea why there is no power steering when I turn left.
Its very bizarre! Edgar is my XJ 1996 Limited and he puts on the heaving steering when turning left. Though not all left turns - it is a pain when trying to parallel park. There is enough power steering fluid in the reserve, can you help or please explain? |
Sounds like what happened to me last Sunday, pump shit itself and I had to use the Armstrong steering method (big biceps and feet to turn the wheel)
Also if you are running a power steering lubricant other than genuine article "Mopar" you can have problems. Look up most lubricant manufacturers guides and they mostly state "See Daimler Chrysler" the correct oil is clear and $13.00 a litre comparable to other power steering oils, if you are using auto trans fluid then you will end up with problems with the system, before pump shit itself I had similar problems to yours (used to use another supposedly compatible oil (Castrol)) cost me another pump (both bearings and front seal collapsed). |
yep i had this problem too. I was told that both my ps pump and steering box were rooted, and with a repair bill of over $1500 i wasn't to happy.
So i got both parts from a wreckers for about $500, i only ended up replacing the box and its all good now. i suspect a seal in the box has gone. but it was cheaper for me to buy another one and put it in rather than a rebuild of my original one. my suggestion, start ringing around the wreckers. dale |
Mine too second hand pump $190.00
all work done by me |
Thanks...
Looks like I'm to spend time at the wreckers too!! |
go to Supa F Spares or ring them
http://www.supafspares.com.au/ that is where I got mine from beware that there are two different pumps one that has belt tensioner on steering pump and other pump is fixed mounted / belt tensioner is on alternator |
