Steering Wheel Play

Anybody played with the steering gear adjustment to get rid of excessive play in the steering wheel ?

I have an inch or so of free play in the wheel. All the steering linkages seem fine. I have a diesel XJ and will need to take off the fan shroud to get to the adjustment. Any gotchas ??

Cheers.

Excessive play means one thing - the box is worn. Attempting to adjust same will - and may - lead to the box binding up in daily use.
These things need to be adjusted in a workshop (if it's the problem) and they need to be adjusted on a workbench with special equipment.

Will the Jeep dealer know where to find the steering box?

Sorry I've been too hard on the Jeep dealers. Open the bonnet for them first, they'll find it OK then....

Yes or the mounts for the steering box, or the tie rod knuckles etc. get someone in your car, get them to go left to right with the wheel and look at what moves under the front, ie play in knuckles or box.
