Snow and kids Vic - suggestions?

Anyone got any good suggestions about a destination in Vic; not necessarily camping or hard core 4WD, but somewhere good to head with the kids (pre skiing age) this winter in Victoria to give them a gentle taste of snow (i.e. without spending mega bucks on ski resort accom). Some driving in snow would be a bonus.

Mt Buffalo (near Bright) great for toboganing and Lake Mountian (near Marysville) - although Lake Mountain usually gets good snow late in the season. Here are some pics of our visit to Mt Buffalo August last year (that was a snow chain day but not for 4WDs!).

We were at Marysville last June and took a drive up to Lake Mountain no snow.

PM me if you would like to discuss further.

both great places. You can get to drive in the snow & mud. Plenty of room at top of Mt Skene to play in snow etc. Easy day trip from Mansfield or better still Jamieson Hotel or caravan park. Both these places aren't ski resorts, just mountains.

Just hope we get some snow.

My club went last year and you could get to the top and down the otherside. A couple of weeks before and you could only get part way up.

Check first.

Yeah - all the tracks behind Buller and Mt Stirling are great.

here's some pics from near Bluff Hut weekend before last:

You can camp down in the Howqua valley (great camp areas) and have daytrips up the hills.

Just be aware that a lot of the vic high country 4x4 tracks are closed from after queen's b'day w/e till cup weekend!

Lake Mountain is great, very family-orientated, although I'd avoid it on the weekends. Its XC only, so no lifts and no ConTiki type powder hounds to put up with. We've been toboganning there since mine were toddlers. Bundle them up well and take dry gear for after. BBQ facilities (can't beat a sausage sizzle in the snow) as well as takeaway food & coffee available. Nearest accom is Marysville but its an easy day trip from anywhere east of Melbourne really. You will need to officially carry tyre chains but I've never had to fit 'em in 5 years of Subaruing.
The Mount Buffalo Chalet has apparently shut (mountain is still open), which is a shame after it was saves from fires just a few years ago. Might be worth checking if you're heading there.
