Thanks all, I just smelled rather than saw smoke so sounds like it could be the alternator. Will try to drop the battery in another car to charge tomorrow and see if it runs for any length of time...

Will the multimeter read the jeep's alternator output if it's only running while connected to the other car, or do you mean try charging the battery and then testing the alternator if it starts?

Just wondering if it's normal to have the oil pressure fluctuate while driving/idling

at idle it sits at the 3.0 mark, pretty much dead center, as soon as you accelerate or are driving the needle...
