As the other guys have said...your thermo is stuffed. Happened to me and I fitted a new one...back then it cost me about $120. The temp guage needle went back to where it should be within 8 - 10 kms....

A 2.4 is perfect for the school run on snowy days. If you want to tow a van, find a decent 2.8 CRD, or if it's a light rig, a 2.5CRD might do.

First thing I would do is unhook the battery for an hour or so...while you are waiting, remove and check (and clean) the MAF sensor.

Hook it all back up and go from there.
