solid wire is ok make sure you pre heat thhe weld area to remove the moisture and chill factor from the casting,
also weld only in the plug holes in the pumpkin

do your first pass weld 1/3 the way round then start the next pass behind the weld you have doneand weld the next 1/3 and finnish...

i would stand the diff on end so as to weld it as a flat horizontal surface...
