I've been using a 180amp sprinter alternator for years without issue. It's a dumb alternator in comparison to the Jeep alternator but supply it 12 volts to the correct pin and you'r good to go.

AGM should be OK to install as charging voltage will be the same as the standard flooded battery. The only downside is they're a little more expensive.

I've got a Touareg with an AGM and it lasted...
