AFAIK the clutch fan will usually pull a lot more air than a thermo fan. I was considering the mod but when a rad bloke told me I am best sticking with the clutch fan I went no further with it.

As the crank sensor gets old it becomes more prone to failure when hot. When its on it way out it will be affected by heat. Its not to do with the fan or engine temp.
