I always understood that the the transmition oil went from the sump through the pump, around the gearbox lubing the pistons, solenoids and belts and providing hydrolic pressure to various galleries.
then back to the sump, or on to the torque converter, where it gets smashed and it is the torque converter where the vast majority of the heat goes into the oil.
It then goes out to the cooler.
So, again as I understand it, the temp of the oil going out of the box to the cooler is the temp of the oil after it has been through the torque converter- torque converter temp.
Whereas the temperature sensitive components of the trans get its oil from the sump.
Apparently the ATF is perminatly damaged it if goes above 140c a in line temp gauge could be used to manage that aspect of it although I would think a light or buzzer would be the go if that was your primary concern.
not trying to start a pi$$ing comp here just discussing ideas.
