The last paragraph brings back memories. Bought a "new" 1974 CJ5 soft top from a car yard in Adelaide in late 1975 for about $4000. Apparently a Dealer unloaded some slow stock pretty cheap.The main problem was the soft top. It had gone hard and cracked. My wife used to keep a small umbrella for use "inside" when it rained until we could afford a new Bestop. It served us well with regular trips to Wilcannia, Port Lincoln and Streaky Bay as well as Melbourne and Darwin. A set of Michelin radials did wonders for the handling. Sold it in 1980 when we purchased a CJ7 Regenade.
A friends brother now has it and I'd love to buy it back.
