Its cut off so that when off road and dropping over steep drop offs or into holes he does not Crush up the whole rear panel less chance of hitting the body if its not there.
They do this on Discos Range Rover classics, Patrols and cruiser wagons
I have crushed a few rear quarters over the years and it tends to crease up a far way if not careful.
