well, its not more awkward than other vehicles
. Replacing the wp was my first ever job on the xj, in fact my first job ever on any car...
I can recall my t-stat housing gasket was the same. Thin smear of Permatex gasket maker on both mating surfaces and carefully putting the gasket in place seems to have done the job on mine without leaks. Just saying its not per se rendered useless.
