Have you considered pulling a light bulb out of one of your rear lights and sticking the multimeter in the socket? Then you could turn the lights on and touch areas in the trunk to see if you get voltage flowing through the meter. Once you have voltage flowing through the meter, you know you have a good ground... Just a thought, that's how we search for grounds on the airplane...
