I was stuck for 3 days in Bangkok some years ago due to airline problem. I didn't like Bangkok, coz way too busy, so jumped on the local bus to Kanchanaburi which was only 2 hours north. There I rented a postie bike for $10 a day, room with an ensuite for $8/night overlooking the river Kwai.
Had some cooking lessons, spent time at the Tiger Temple, visited the Death Railway Museum and some ancient ruins where they found some lamps from the roman empire!.. What a great place!
